Due to the internal promotion of one of our valued team members, Brookside Primary School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dedicated and talented Teaching Assistant with Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) responsibilities to join our hardworking and supportive staff team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified teacher, an experienced HLTA, or an ambitious teaching assistant who is keen to develop their career and undertake HLTA training.

Part time work - a minimum of three days may be considered for an outstanding candidate. One of the working days will need to be a Friday.
About the Role
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school.
During the mornings, you will primarily work within our Key Stage 1 classes, supporting children's learning through targeted interventions and small group teaching in:
- Reading
- Writing
- Phonics
- Mathematics
Three afternoons each week, you will undertake HLTA responsibilities, leading learning during teachers' PPA time. While this will predominantly be within Key Stage 1, there may be opportunities to work with pupils in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 2.
You will receive medium-term planning from class teachers and will be responsible for planning, delivering and assessing lessons to ensure high-quality learning experiences for pupils. The HLTA work will be renumerated with 3.25 hours paid at HLTA rate per afternoon this is completed.
As a valued member of our team, you may occasionally be asked to provide classroom cover at short notice due to staff absence, requiring confidence, flexibility and excellent classroom management skills. When this occurs uplift to the HLTA rate will be paid.
The role will also include:
- Supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
- Delivering targeted interventions and one-to-one support where appropriate
- Working closely with teaching and inclusion staff to meet pupils' individual needs
- Contributing positively to the wider life of the school
There may occasionally be a requirement to support with midday supervisory duties to cover staff absence.

We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience of working with children in an educational or childcare setting
- Has a proven ability to support children's learning and development, particularly those with SEND
- Is enthusiastic, positive and committed to helping every child succeed
- Demonstrates flexibility and resilience in a busy school environment
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Is sensitive to the individual needs of all children
- Has strong literacy and numeracy skills (GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent)
- Holds a HLTA qualification, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), or is willing to undertake HLTA training
- Has experience of supporting children in EYFS and/or Key Stage 1
- Has knowledge of phonics, or a willingness to learn and develop quickly (we use RWInc Phonics)
- Understands how young children learn and can help plan effective next steps in learning alongside the class teacher
- Maintains confidentiality and professional discretion at all times
- Is willing to attend training and meetings as required
Salary Information
Teaching Assistant Hours
Grade 4
- Monday: 5.5 hours
- Tuesday: 3.25 hours
- Wednesday: 3.25 hours
- Thursday: 3.25 hours
- Friday: 5.5 hours
Full-time equivalent salary: £25,185 - £25,584 (pro rata)
Hourly rate: £13.05
HLTA Hours
Grade 8
- Tuesday: 3.25 hours
- Wednesday: 3.25 hours
- Thursday: 3.25 hours
(Each afternoon includes 2.25 hours leading learning and 1 hour for preparation and marking.)
Full-time equivalent salary: £31,537 - £34,434 (pro rata)
Hourly rate: £16.35
A one-hour unpaid lunch break will be taken each day.
Additional HLTA cover undertaken beyond the contracted hours will be paid at the appropriate HLTA rate.
