Job Introduction

Five Acres Primary School are looking for a Lunchtime Supervisor to join our team.

Role of a Lunchtime Supervisor 

Duties and Responsibilities

Each Lunchtime Supervisor will be allocated areas and specific tasks for which they are responsible; these may vary from day to day depending on requirements. Each Supervisory Assistant looks after a must be prepared to accept a variation if any emergency calls another Lunchtime Supervisor away.  

Staff must be on time and in place to start work at the appropriate time. The main areas of work responsibility will be the dining hall and the playground or areas of the school used during the dinner break, including areas where the children wait or queue for their meal.

A good standard of behaviour is needed and it is important that this should be maintained throughout the dinner period which should be a pleasant time for all concerned.

The Lunchtime Supervisor must act as a responsible and caring adult with the health, safety, and welfare of the children always in mind; must show conduct which commands respect; and must see that the children behave sensibly and respectfully at all times. Children should be encouraged to speak sensibly to each other whilst eating but not shouting. This is a social time and children will not be asked to sit in silence.

The Lunchtime Supervisor must be aware of how to get access to first aid and the health and safety structures in place in case of emergency.

Supervision of dining areas:  

  • Helping children to cut up food, the safe carrying of plates and food
  • Managing queues to dining areas and within the dining areas
  • See that the overall arrangement for children to dine promotes an orderly and pleasant meals service.
  • Children should enjoy lunchtimes and learn that this is a social period
  • See that any spillage is dealt with quickly and children are reminded to sit appropriately to reduce chances of this happening
  • See that plates / trays are not left in dangerous positions, and are wiped where necessary.  
  • Supervise return of used crockery and cutlery by the children
  • Ensure the pupils leave the tables clean for next occupant
  • See that dining areas are left clean and tidy.  

Supervision outside dining areas:  

  • Arrange supervision to move around amongst the children within the area you are covering.  
  • Ensure acceptable standards of behaviour are maintained.  
  • Try to avoid children hurting themselves or damaging property. 
  • Support children to play appropriately by helping with use of equipment, talking with children. This is not a ‘policing’ role but a supportive learning one. 
  • Although children may need help they should be encouraged to be independent e.g. doing up zips, tidying up 
  • Staff should be arranged to ensure the whole area is covered and all pupils can be seen 
  • Scrap materials for use at lunchtime are kept in the PlayPod. Accessing these and helping children to access these is part of the role of a Lunchtime Supervisor.

Grade 1 SCP 1

Current hourly rate £11.59

Hours: 11.30 – 1.30pm Monday to Friday Term Time only
