Job/Person Summary

Are you a nurse, an armed forces Medical Assistant or another medical or care practitioner or do you simply have experience helping people with medical needs? Whatever your experience, if you are keen to work in a school supporting children with their medical needs then we want to hear from you.

We are a small school with approximately 400 pupils on roll. The school is set in a beautiful rural community, and we pride ourselves on working with all our young people as well as their families in the wider community.

 

The role is term time only, thus allowing a really healthy work, life balance. At Danebury School, we pride ourselves on ensuring our pupils are engaged and involved in their own learning, so they feel an ownership of their school. Pupils will achieve their potential in their examinations but, just as importantly, will develop life skills enabling them to be successful adults.

We are looking for a compassionate and caring individual who can quickly and accurately assess the needs of young people who report as ill or who have a first aid need and can take positive action to help. Ideally, you will have some form of medical background that allows you to talk and operate with confidence when supporting young people and communicating with their parents/carers. Being a friendly face who is available for young people who seek help as they navigate puberty or health worries is vital. It is also vital that the successful candidate doesn’t suffer fools gladly either, as building resilience in young people is so important for their personal development.

 As the Medical and Welfare Officer for the school you will:

• Assess first aid problems presented by pupils and staff, taking appropriate action in the event of an emergency and communicating with staff and parents as necessary.
• Keep an up-to-date record of accidents and incidents, including details of injuries, make any required RIDDOR reports for accidents at work, review for patterns and report to the Health & Safety Leader.
• Be responsible for administering prescribed drugs which are necessary to be taken by pupils during the school day, ensuring that parental consent is obtained and recorded.
• Maintaining the medical register.
• Be responsible for the safe keeping of prescribed drugs in a locked cupboard.
• Carry out stock audits of all first aid boxes and first aid kits throughout the school and ensure they are replenished.
• Maintain stocks and order medical supplies and equipment in order to ensure adequate emergency medical resources exist within the school Co-ordinate, administer and maintain Individual Health Care Plans and risk assessment for pupils with specific medical needs in conjunction with parents, the SEND Team and any other relevant health care professionals.
• Ensure these are communicated to relevant staff members.
• Work with the Attendance Officer and Year Teams to support pupil attendance in school.
• Coordinate all government led immunisation programmes.
• Ensure teaching and support staff have appropriate awareness and understanding of the common medical conditions in the school.
• Be responsible for creating materials to display this information in key areas of the school.
• Supporting trip planners with the medical provision required whilst working with students outside of the main school site.
• Support the process of transition for year 6 students moving to year 7 at Danebury School and liaise with primary schools regarding student’s medical needs.
