Job/Person Summary

The Thomas Outreach Programme is an educational service for preschool children aged 2 – 4 years with social  communication difficulties/autism. The service typically supports children at home and in their preschool setting.

Norman Gate School caters for the needs of children with a range of difficulties. We work with local pre-schools, playgroups and parents to support young children with social communication/autistic spectrum difficulties. We support inclusion into mainstream pre-school/school.

You will be a team player, be approachable and empathetic, be able to work on your own initiative and to time scales. You will be knowledgeable about the needs of children with social, communication and learning difficulties and have experience of working with such children.

Ideal skills for the role include:

• Nationally recognised qualifications at Level 3 in a relevant discipline, e.g. education, health, social care or a willingness to work towards
• Experience of working with neurodiverse children in early years and their families, to include special educational needs, in a paid or voluntary capacity
• Ability to develop effective relationships with children and their parents/carers and other professionals
• Capacity to deal with challenging situations
• Awareness of the impact of family, social and environmental factors on the educational and life chances of children and young people
• Good verbal communication skills, listening and observation
• Able to make independent judgements and exercise initiative within agreed limits
• Able to maintain accurate records and present information clearly and concisely
• Good knowledge of child development and the social and emotional factors that affect a child's capacity to learn.

 You need to have a sense of humour and be flexible. You will also need to be a car driver with a vehicle you are able to use for work.
